Brief History about Schecter Guitars

Schecter Guitar Research Shop was started by a Gentleman named David Schecter in the year 1976 as a Guitar Repair shop in California and eventually grew as a  supplier of every single part needed to build a guitar to companies like Fender and Gibson and other Custom Guitar shops. Then by 1979 Schecter came out with it's fully assembled electric guitars which were of very high quality and finish and obviously expensive.

Schecter Guitars became popular instantly and were a big hit amongst Rockers. But the problem was that they were not into MASS PRODUCTION and weren't able meet the customer demand. Schecter Guitar models were all based on Fender's Telecaster and Stratocaster models. Schecter Telecaster model became very popular after Pete Townsend of The Who fell in love with it and this model was later known unofficially as Pete Townsend Model.

Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits is also an avid Schecter Fan and recorded the album 'Making Movies' in 1980 using Schecter Stratocaster Style Guitar. Schecter went through couple of ownership changes and now it is owned by a Japanese named Hishtake Shibuya. Thats about the history. Now I will take you through some of their popular models. Schecter Guitars are known till date for it's superior aesthetics, design and at the same time affordability and are a class apart.

Schecter Electric Guitar Models

I have done a detailed comparative review the following Schecter Guitar models with an equivalent model in this Post.

#1 Schecter C1 Plus

Features:This is the most popular model from the Schecter Stable that sounds like the most high end Les Paul but costs much lesser than that. Schecter C1+ comes with a Flame Maple top, custom Vector fingerboard inlays, Grover tuning pegs, set neck construction, cream body, neck, and headstock binding, and pickups custom designed by the most dignified Seymour Duncan. You can easily switch between heavy metal or rock or pop rock by blending the tone and volumes provided for each pick up and 24 Jumbo Frets. You can choose your C1+ from the following shades - Black Cherry, Vintage Honeyburst, and Dark Brown Sunburst.

Price: Above $800

Comparison: This model can be compared with the legendary Fender Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar (Maple, with Gig Bag) which comes with 3 Standard Single Coiled Strat(R) pickups with 21 Medium Jumbo Frets and a synch Tremolo arm to give you that legendary Rich FENDER TONE that can be mixed and matched using a 5 Position Pickup Switching Control, Master Volume control Knob and 2 Tone Control Knobs for the Neck and Middle Pickups all in just $499.You can choose your favorite Fender Strat from 6 stunning colors. But I would recommend you to go for a Schecter model as it gives you much more superior features, aesthetics and design for just $399. << Back

#2 Schecter Devil Custom Electric Guitar
(Diamond Series)

Features:This beast comes with a Ebony Mahogany w/Solid Burl Maple Top body fitted with  Fingerboard, 24 Jumbo Frets, “Devil Eye” Inlays at 12th fret, Multi-ply (Neck & Headstock)  binding fitted with Active EMG 81/85 Pickups. This guitar is very unique in it's design and sound that you wouldn't find one like this anywhere in the market. It sounds great like any other high end guitar with rich and crispy tones with the superior EMG pickups. Devil is very easy to play with it's comfortable and easy to hold Mahagony neck with Ebony Fretboard. This comes in 3 different shades - Dark Amber Burst, Blood Red Burst and Dark Green Burst.

Price: Above $1000

Comparison:The Schecter Devil can be equated to Fender Deluxe Players Stratocaster Electric Guitar (Maple with Gig Bag). This one is similar to the Standard Stratocaster model from Fender with the difference of having a Gold plated Vintage Styled Machine Heads and Gold Plated Vintage Tremolo arm that raises the price up to $519 with a Gig Bag. But this cannot match the Ease of Use and the beefier and richer tone produced from the Classic EMG pickups of Schecter Devil.

#3 Schecter C1 Hellraiser Electric Guitar

Features:Schecter C1 Hellraiser also comes with Active EMG 81/89 humbuckers, Mahagony body and neck, Rosewood Fingerboard with 24X Jumbo frets, Gothic Cross Inlays and Grover Tuners. The Mahagony body gives this model a clean and crisp tone and a cleaner sound. IF you would want to buy a guitar with the same features it would cost double the price. That's the beauty of Schecter, they just don't build guitars but create them. You can get this Hellraiser in 3 shades - White, Black Cherry and Black.

Price:Above $1000.

Comparison:This model is almost equivalent in price with Fender Classic Player Telecaster Thinline Deluxe Electric Guitar (with Gig Bag) but cannot match it's features or aesthetics. Fender Classic Telecaster's 2 Wide-Range Humbucking Pickups and 21 Medium Jumbo Frets cannot match up with the superior EMG Humbuckers and 24X Jumbo Frets fitted on to the Schecter C1 Hellraiser. Fender Telecaster is priced at $799 where as the Schecter Hellraiser is much cheaper at $749.

#4 Schecter Tempest Custom Electric Guitar

Features:This is a very attractive guitar with a very un-conventional look. Unlike it's counterparts it doesn't have bolt-neck, but a Set-Neck which many say will transmit the sound vibrations more effectively from the neck to the body.I really do not know whether that is 100% true but a bolt-neck one would be easier to repair and maintain. This model comes with a Mahagony body, Rosewood Fingerboard, Maple Neck and 22 Medium Frets with a warm and clean rich Tone to back it up, which is a real class apart in it's category and a very good value for money. It sports the very versatile Seymour Duncan Designed HB-102 pickups, which can be switched on/off via Push/Pull 'Tone' controls.

Price: Above $300.

Comparison:Schecter Tempest and Ibanez RG350DX Electric Guitar are almost the same in terms of it's features and price is the same. Ibanez RG350DX comes with 24 Jumbo Frets with Basswood Body and Bound Rosewood Fingerboard with 2 Ibanez Infinity Series Humbuckers and One Single Coil Standard Ibanez Infinity Series Pickup which gives a clean and warm tone. This model has the best usability and fast playability in it's class and the best in it's price range. If you aske me which is the best amongst Ibanez RG series and Tempest I would say both are good in different ways and would be a good bet if you go for any one of these.

#5 Schecter Synyster Custom Electric Guitar

Features: This is the same signature guitar that you see on the stage with the famous band 'Avenged Sevenfold', which brought shredding back to the mainstream with full force. Now you can own the very same AXE etched with the Signature of Synyster Gates, the guitarist of the band 'Avenged Sevenfold' for yourself. This guitar has been designed to give a sharp look and beefy and rich tone that stands out even if you are playing the fastest riff. This model sports a set Mahogany neck,24 Jumbo Fret Rosewood Fingerboard,a pair of Seymour Duncan SH8 Invader Humbuckers in the bridge and neck position. To talk about the killer looks ? A bat-winged skull at the twelfth fret, and an abbreviation of his name "SYN" running from the 5th to the 9th fret. Even the headstock has the Synyster treatment with a demonic skull wearing a top hat inlay, a Synyster truss rod cover, and a hardware color-matching Grover tuners for the perfect combination of tuning stability and killer good looks which comes in two shades - White and Black.

Price: Above $1200

Comparison: The Legendary Classic Fender - American Standard Telecaster (with Gig Bag) and Gibson SG Raw Power Electric Guitar(with Gig Bag) do come with the same price tag. And both of them are real beasts that you can count on. So I would recommend American Telecaster over Schecter and Gibson, but it is only my personal choice, but 3 of them are the best in their class and you may buy any one of them with your eyes shut, it would be a great value for money.

Conclusion:

So if you are a hobbyist and just want to play guitar for fun or play occasionally on stages then you need not look beyond C1 Plus. But if you are a budding professional then C1 Hellraiser would be the best. Devil Custom Model is the one for you if you are into hard core lead guitar playing, the neck of Devil is designed in such a way that you can easily move your hand across it.
