In this review I have tried to cover all the  critical details of Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar course which has won the “2011 Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s Player’s Choice Award for Best Instructional Material”.  In this review I have tried to cover everything from the guitar tutor of this course, the targeted audience to the lesson structure, benefits, negatives, cost and much more. Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar have their learning materials spread out on DVDs, CDs and books which you can learn at the comfort of your home. This course will help you build a strong foundation on the concepts of guitar starting from the beginner level and gradually progressing towards the advanced level guitar concepts and techniques in a slow and easy pace.

About Steve Krenz the author and instructor at Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar

Steve Krenz is a highly experienced and seasoned guitar player and tutor with a degree in music with expertise in varied styles and genres of music from jazz and blues to classical.

He has played with a number of bands  both on stage and in studios and also in symphony orchestras.  He has taught students coming from various skill levels and conducted workshops all over the world. Steve is currently playing for a famous band in Nashville, Tennessee.

I have found Steve to be extremely soft spoken and down to earth with a gifted skill in teaching others. When you start the lessons you will discover that it’s never boring to learn from him.  He imbibes a positive attitude in his students which ignites that fire in you to learn with ever refreshing zeal and enthusiasm. He covers each topic with great thoroughness and progresses in a pace that you can easily keep up with.

Targeted audience for Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar

Gibson’s Learn and Master Guitar Lessons are the best suited for children, Beginners and Intermediate level players. But may not be that comprehensive for highly advanced guitar players.

Children: This guitar course has been voted as the best home learning system for guitar, esp. for small children above 8 years old. But these guitar lessons can also be taken by children below 8 years with a bit of guidance and supervision which is essential to develop good practice habits and study regimen in them. But initially they need to be encouraged a lot until they get the hang of the new motor skills and settles down with the ability to play few notes and basic chords.

Beginners: This course has been exclusively designed for the beginners. It assumes that the student knows nothing about the guitar and starts by explaining everything from how to hold the guitar and pick, parts of guitar and then advances gradually towards explaining each string, notes and basic chords. But when you learn how to apply these chords on easy to play songs, things become easier and interesting. And every lesson is followed by a play along practice session which helps you in developing good learning habits and effective practice regimen.

Intermediate level players: If you are in the intermediate level then all you need to do is skip few lessons if you think they are too basic for you, otherwise you can use them to refresh your beginner lessons. You will face a lot of challenging lessons at the intermediate level but they are very well eased out and made interesting by your instructor with elaborate play along practice sessions and workshops which makes you a well rounded and disciplined guitar player.

Advanced level players: To be frank this course may not be that appropriate for the advanced guitar players. This course has been exclusively designed to bring you up to the advanced level along with the knowledge of a number of styles and genres. So you cannot expect this course to cover each genre and style in detail, because that’s not what this is intended for.

This course is voted as the Best Home Learning Guitar course which can be pursued by CHILDREN above 9-10 years of age.

This course is designed for learning at home and is a slow paced 2 years complete guitar curriculum designed to replace private tuition. But you can either finish it off earlier or take your own time. It all depends on your speed.

This course is as good as learning 1 on 1 from an instructor  or may be more effective than that and very comprehensive. Plus, you could almost save over a $2000 that you would otherwise spend on a private guitar tutor.

Lesson structure

Each lesson is mainly divided into 3 parts starting with a play along video section where you can play along and learn each lesson thoroughly with your instructor followed by the instructor giving you valuable practice and guitar tips.

The final section is a play along practice session or workshop where you can practice along with your instructor where by you develop a number of effective practice habits and discipline. It’s like a guitar tutor helping you out in every practice session which you can never expect from a private tutor.

The original price of this course is $249 which is a bit expensive compared to other online guitar courses, but it is justified with the course content, quality of instruction and other learning materials.
